A special dedication ceremony, sponsored by the Chesapeake
City Symbol Committee , was held at 4 p.m.on September 16, 2014 for “The Chesapeake Jewel,” a blue heron installation
designed and created by the
Peninsula Glass Guild .
“ Now interest in our heron project has spread beyond Chesapeake,” said symbol committee chairwoman and city treasurer
Barbara Carraway, adding that Guild members invested a lot of time and creativity into the project.
The bird joins 10 others nesting at sponsorship sites throughout the city: Tidewater Community College, Chesapeake
Regional Medical Center, BB&T Bank, courtside City Hall building, Heron’s Landing, Central Library, Wal-Mart
Supercenter, Fulton Bank, Dollar Tree corporate headquarters and the American GFM Corporation offices.
